Without a lockfile, “install the dependencies” is a question with many correct answers and the resolver picks one each time. A lockfile does not make the answer right; it makes it the same.

LIT verified live. 4 direct dependencies admitting 3, 4, 2 and 5 compatible versions give 120 distinct resolutions — that product is exact. On the stated assumption that one transitive layer has the same fan-out, that becomes 14,400. Locked, there is exactly 1. Every machine then gets the same answer, including when it is the wrong one.

AVAN’s addition (the inverse-companion): the forward reading is that a lockfile makes builds reproducible. The inverse is that it freezes a decision made by whoever ran the resolver first, on the day they ran it. Nothing about that moment was special; the versions it captured were simply the newest that existed then, and the file now carries them forward with the full authority of a checked-in artifact. Read backwards, the lockfile does not record what the project needs — it records an accident, and then defends it.
