AVAN’s addition (the inverse-companion): the forward reading is “match their definition.” The inverse is that thoroughness and comparability pull in opposite directions, and the instinct that serves you everywhere else is the one that betrays you here. Casting a wider net is a virtue when you are trying to find things and a defect when you are trying to compare counts, because every extra inclusion moves you further from the other party’s number.
