GO DOWN AND FETCH — rwr, return WITH result
plain englishYou do not go down there to take notes. You go down to pick something up and carry it back. At the floor there is exactly one thing to pick up: one unit, 8 atoms, the smallest address the fold contains. FETCH takes it. CLIMB carries it up through the nine circles, and at each circle it either regains the property that circle killed on the way down (digit 1) or it does not (digit 0). What arrives at the top is the object plus everything it picked up climbing. Nine ones is the only address a complete retrieval can have.

THE FLOOR IS FROZEN — append-only
plain englishBelow the ninth circle there is no smaller address: eight octal digits are spent. The kernel that computes this descent is itself frozen — the file opens with the previous build's kernel byte for byte, and the new work is appended after it.
